What's Required
A student with an auditory impairment is one who has been determined to meet the criteria for deafness as stated in 34 CFR, §300.8(c)(3), or for hearing impairment as stated in 34 CFR, §300.8(c)(5). The evaluation data reviewed by the multidisciplinary team in connection with the determination of a student's eligibility based on an auditory impairment must include an audiological evaluation by a licensed audiologist. The evaluation data will include a description of the implications of the hearing loss for the student's hearing in a variety of circumstances with or without recommended amplification.

Hearing aid and frequency modulation (FM) system should be referred to on the IEP as assistive listening device or amplification rather than hearing aid or personal hearing aid. Audiological management is a support for assistive technology and not a related service. Audiological management on the IEP is to support the student and teacher with: (a) understanding the proper implementation, wear, and positioning of hearing aids and/ or FM systems, (b) obtaining batteries for devices and equipment, (c) selecting the best seating for optimal hearing, and (d) identifying methods for determining when a hearing aid or FM system is not working properly or not working at all.

What To Do

Audiology services are designed to provide support to students with disabilities who have auditory impairment and require these services to benefit from special education.

The ARD/IEP Team determines the need for audiology services based upon following:
  • range of hearing loss
  • nature of hearing loss
  • degree of hearing loss
  • medical or other professional determination specfic to the habilitation of hearing

Provision of habilitative activities include:
  • language habilitation,
  • auditory training,
  • speech reading (lip-reading),
  • hearing evaluation, and
  • speech conservation
  • Creation and administration of programs for prevention of hearing loss
  • Counseling and guidance of children, parents, and teachers regarding hearing loss
  • Determination of children’s needs for group and individual amplification, selecting and fitting an appropriate aid, and evaluating the effectiveness of amplification

Referral Process

Referrals are made through a variety of sources: ARD/IEP Committee, parents, teachers, audiologists, and other professionals. The Field Office nurse consultant will facilitate this process with the Audiology Department.

Evaluation Criteria/Process

The determination is made upon the completion of an audiological evaluation and an otological examination for students suspected of having a hearing loss. This evaluation includes a written report that contains a description of the implications of the hearing loss for the student's hearing in a variety of circumstances with or without recommended amplification.

Service Delivery Models

The audiologist provides direct service through a variety of activities for students with disabilities needing audiology supports and services on the IEP.

Audiology in the IEP

A student who receives services from a teacher of the deaf or hard of hearing also receives audiology services on the IEP.
